Get healthy locks without splurging

Healthy hair doesn't mean you have to splurge on expensive products. Doctors say you can get just what you need in the drug store aisle if you know what to look for.

So many products, but which ones really help your hair and scalp be their healthiest?

Dermatologist Shirley Chi says there are a number of drug stores products that perform as well as the pricier versions.

"May not be exactly the same but it will give you a lot more bang for you buck," said Dr. Chi.

Dress Fest inspires and excites prom-goers

Kelen Dowdy knew it was the one for her the moment she saw it.

It was a strapless, turquoise Cinderella-style evening gown being modeled by a fellow student during the first annual Henderson County Prom Fest held this weekend at the Mountain Lodge off Upward Road.

The crowd oohed and aahed amid camera flashlights going off as beautiful young women in sparkling floor length gowns and handsome young men in tuxedos strutted their stuff on the catwalk on Sunday afternoon during a show to model the latest prom fashions. Girls squealed and their mothers smiled as each couple showed off sequined glamour worthy of the red carpet walk at the Academy Awards in Hollywood.

The event caused a change of heart for the 18-year-old West Henderson High student regarding her choice of attire for this year’s prom, she said.

“I already bought a dress, but now I’m having second thoughts,” she laughed. “I just know I’ve got to try that on.” read more...

Hopefuls yearn to be perfect fit for 'Model'

It was a nasty day, but the hopefuls didn't mind. Thousands of young women with Tyra Banks on their minds showed up at the Westin San Francisco Market Street one day last week for a shot at stardom on "America's Next Top Model."

A very, very long shot.

Still, their eyes were bright, their jeans were tight, and they waited for hours until they got their moment to state their name and aspirations in front of a video camera.

The popular reality series on the CW network has, up until now, featured typically leggy girls who appear to grow even taller and thinner as the season progresses. But not this time. For next year's Cycle 13 season, the casting call went out for those 5 feet 7 or shorter. read more...

The magazine aims to provide fashion, health, beauty and culture tips to college students, according to sophomore Brittany Robbins, its editor-in-chief.

“It’s nice to have a college-centered fashion magazine,” Robbins said. “It is a fashion magazine, but at the same time, it’s a Tufts fashion magazine. It’s fashion for the college student on the run.”

Dannii Minogue's burlesque tips

Dannii Minogue will take style inspiration from Dita Von Teese in the new series of 'The X Factor'.

The Australian judge says she is a big fan of the burlesque dancer and wants to copy her wardrobe for her next stint on the panel of the TV talent show.

She said: "Who's my beauty icon? It's got to be Dita Von Teese. Nobody beats her for the power look."

Dannii ? who has been dating former rugby star Kris Smith for six months ? also hinted at having a crush on fellow 'X Factor' judge Simon Cowell, who has recently been spotted with flecks of grey in his black hair.

She laughed: "I am a total sucker for me with grey hair." read more...

Tips: Host a Clothing-Swap Party

- Thinking of hosting your own clothing swap party?

You don't have to only swap clothes; think shoes, accessories, books, household items even beauty products! How many times have you purchased a new hair product and only used it once?

The planning part is easy, set a date, come up with a guest list (that includes your most fashionable friends) and send out an Evite (wording suggestions are below). Encourage your guests to bring clothes and accessories that are still stylish and in good shape. Buy a couple bottles of wine and snacks (or ask guests to bring some) then clear space in your home and closets for the incoming clothes.

You may want to designate certain areas for certain items, for example, pants in this pile, jackets on this rack. When guests arrive, have them sort their items and put into the appropriate piles/racks. read more...

Do you want instant long hair?

At some point within our lives we have all wanted our hair to be that little bit longer. Whether you have recently had your hair cut short or you just feel like a change; growing your hair can be a timely process but luckily for you that wait can be made all the better through the use of Hair Extensions.

There are so many different styles of hair out today that many of us don’t really know where to begin when looking for the perfect one but one thing is for sure Hair Extension are starting to overtake all other styles as being the most wanted. Hair Extensions have many uses and are now finally fully available to members of the general public; they are not just confined to celebrity land anymore! Since their arrival back in the 1980’s they have advanced and in the society that we live in today there are now more ways than ever of having Hair Extensions applied.

The one thing that is for sure when it comes to having your Hair Extensions applied, which is that quality is paramount so when you come to having Hair Extensions applied you need to find a process of application that is most suited to you as well as what type of Hair Extension you have applied.

The two main types of Hair Extensions that are available to you are human hair extensions and synthetic. Both of these types are acceptable to be used when it comes to getting hair extensions; however it is more advised to opt for human hair. Even though this is more expensive than synthetic the extra bit that you are paying is worth it as you are able to style human hair more and the quality of it is a lot better. The quality of human hair extensions are more like your natural hair when it comes to the look and feel. read more...

Spa treatments from the kitchen

A home spa experience is tucked into the family kitchen. I'm 50 years old, wrinkle-free, and some of my favorite beauty products are stored in the refrigerator and food cupboard.

Here's the logic: A lot of expensive facial products use fruit acids, honey and olive oil to promote the removal of dead skin and minimization of fine wrinkles. But why pay a fortune for skin care products spiked with food, when you can opt for do-it-yourself recipes without the harmful preservatives and chemicals that are bundled into some personal care products.

With the following ingredients, I have created home spa treatments for my face and hair.

• Tomato and citrus fruits. Slices of tomatoes, oranges and grapefruits promote external and internal health. I slice and eat a bit of the fruit. Step 1: I rub a few of the slices on my face. Step 2: I leave the fruit pulp and juice on my face for 20 minutes. Step 3: Rinse with warm water. Fruit acids brighten the complexion and help your face shed old cells. Test the fruit on a small patch of skin before applying to the entire face.

• Honey and eggs. Whether mixed together or applied separately, honey and raw eggs make a great facial mask. Honey tightens pores and moisturizes the skin. And there's nothing like egg or egg whites on your face. Let the food harden and then rinse with warm water. read more...

New Year, new looks

As winter shivers on, try putting a little Spring into your beauty routine with a few new hair and make-up tricks.

Me models Shauna Sullivan and Emma Sanderson picked up some advice from Carlisle's beauty experts to boost their New Year look.

Dark-eyed brunette Emma Sanderson, 21, of Brampton, was treated to a makeup makeover at Debenhams’ Clarins Spa with beauty therapist, Tricia Mountsey.

Tricia showed Emma how to make the most of her colouring by bringing a few new ideas to her make-up routine.

A radiance-boosting foundation was applied to make the most of Emma’s clear complexion followed by under eye concealer to brighten the whole eye area and act as a base for a smokey eye in plum shades.

Tricia chose plum as a way to highlight Emma’s eye colour – a move away from “safe” taupes and browns which can really make dark eyes pop.

Using a lighter shade all over the eye area then defining the socket and outer corner with the darker plum, is a tried and tested way to smoky eyes. The look can work for day or night according to the intensity of the shadow. Simply load more onto your brush for night and go a little sheerer for day. read more...

How to pep up your winter wardrobe

It's a new year and what better time to replenish your wardrobe. From ankle length maxis to high heeled boots, from starry eyes to curly hairdo- get ready to be a winter goddess this chilly season...

Fashionably yours!

Hey girls, it's time to jazz up your appearance in the most stylish way. Just wear those sexy ankle length maxis, knee length skirts, killer jackets and bright ponchos that are ruling the fashion circuit. First things first, it's your choice, to either follow the fashion rules or break them. We suggest, you go all out and create your very own style statement.

Designer Abhishek Dutta says, "What's hot this season is the bolero, team it up with your denims or a dress. Another interesting thing are treggings, wear them with beautiful kurtis or tops. For an evening party, opt for ankle length maxis as they are hot this season. High ankle leather textured boots are another absolute must-haves for winters. They make you look sexy, stylish and smart. Also, scarves with digital prints and Swarovski work are very much in demand." It is also commended to try bold colours this winter. Designer Shane Peacock says, "The hot colours are red, black, white, purple, blue, brown, dull gold, shiny silver, bronze and lots of other metallic shades."

Accessorise for attention

Don't step out of that door, until you've accessorised yourself smartly. Accessories can add a lot to your looks, but be careful with over accessorising. Just wear two or three accessories at one go, don't over deck yourself. Designer Puja Arya gives away a few tips on how to accessorise smartly, "Flaunt that clutch. There are lots of beautiful, glitzy bags around, decorated in beads or sequins. Balloon and baggy pants are a super hit this season, so team them up with a big broad belt tied around your waist. Boots can make you a style-icon, so think stylish. A big bag with animal prints also looks very smart. Cozy mufflers, bright woollen scarves, vintage brooches, go-go sunglasses, chunky necklaces, jewel watches and broad belts are destined to spice up your winter dress code." So girls, be a head turner with eye catching accessories! read more...

Enhance your beauty from the inside out

Put a little beauty back in your life, one week at a time. Here are 10 tips from Woman's Day magazine:

• Get the most out of a deep conditioning treatment by squeezing excess water from your hair before applying. This allows it to effectively penetrate the hair shaft.

• Quit smoking (or persuade a friend to). Besides the many health hazards, smoking accelerates the presence of fine lines and wrinkles that pop up as we age -- and really, who needs that?

• Get a glowing complexion by eating more salmon (it's packed with skin-boosting omega-3s).

• Recruit a beauty buddy and make monthly mani-pedi appointments together to catch up.

• Lock in moisture. Turn the water temperature in the shower to warm, not hot (yes, even in the winter) to prevent stripping the skin of its natural oils.

• Load up on vitamin C, a potent antioxidant found in broccoli, red peppers, citrus fruits and strawberries, to keep skin healthy and prevent collagen from breaking down. read more...
